Welcome to Pommelhouse
I posted the first draft of this website on December 1, 2003, which is 20 years to the day after we first moved in. That day in 1983 was cool and misty. We were staying in Allendale with Skeeter, since we had to be out of our house in Hyde Park by the first of November.
We did not dream that we would end up staying in Skeeter’s guest room for a whole month, but there was one delay after another in closing the sale of the house. We shopped and cooked and cleaned in an effort to repay her for letting us stay so long, and I think it ended up being a good deal for all.
I drove out to the house nearly every afternoon before Craig got home. Pirate would come with me, and although I couldn’t get in the house (and didn’t own it yet), I spent time every day in the yard, observing and planning. When we finally closed on the house, I headed out with a car full of bare necessities, my new house keys, and Pirate. I went by way of 2222, 360 and Spicewood Springs. The hills were gray with fine, cold rain.
I let us in. I had called ahead to have the utilities turned on, and the central heating (which we did not have in Hyde Park!) quickly began to warm the house. I let Pirate out the back door. I was so pleased to have a big yard with a five-foot cyclone fence. The three-foot fence at the house on Caswell could not begin to contain my athletic little dog, who loved to maraud and chase cars. At last, I thought, he would be safe. I returned to the car to begin moving in. Pirate was waiting in front, having cleared the five-foot fence like it wasn’t there. He wasn’t sure I was there to stay, and he was not about to get left behind. Obviously he would continue to maraud at will.

Mischief on his mind
