The Chicken Coop
We are officially on the Urban Chicken Bandwagon -- we just got the coop. The East Yard is now a dedicated chicken yard, and we are going to get six chickens.
A while back we formed a chicken coalition with our neighbors Pat and Norma. Norma and I have been talking about getting chickens off and on for years. This last year I have been noticing on our walks that at least two houses within a mile of ours have chickens.
Then just recently I joined an online group called Austin Backyard Poultry Meetup, which turns out to have 900 members! So this is hardly an original idea we have.
As a first step, we took the local Funky Chicken Tour of coops around town in April, and then after much outstanding online research by Norma, we settled on a pre-fab coop from Brad's Cedar Shop in Sealy, Texas.

Pat picked it up in pieces last week (that's mid-May, 2011), and we assembled it this weekend. It's all cedar, except the pressure-treated pine base, and that is a metal roof.
Now, is this a fetching little chicken house or what? I wouldn't mind living there myself.

The entire building process took about an hour. Next: the chickens!!! No, actually, next we have to build a secure inner chicken yard to keep out all our little animal friends, most notably the raccoons. More on that when we get there.
