La Plaza Nueva
La Plaza Nueva feels like the heart of old Granada. People sit out in the cafes, eating pizza and drinking coffee or wine. Street people gather by the Darro with their dogs. They look just like the kids that hang out on the Drag in Austin.
By the time we got back down from the Alhambra, it was two o'clock, and we had been walking for five hours. We had climbed every available tower and rampart.
The pedestrian route from the Plaza Nueva up the Calle de Gomerez to the Alhambra is steep, as you can see below, but it’s a very attractive walk.
It was chilly, and the leaves were in full autumn color. Water flowed freely from springs in the hillside, splashing down in waterfalls and rushing noisily alongside the road.
Throughout the trip we walked a lot, but nothing compared to the day we saw the Alhambra.
Here you can see how the hillside rises above the Darro.
We sat out on the Plaza and ate a late lunch. Looking up, we could see the tower with the flags where we'd just been.
