Carcassonne
It is said that everyone should see Carcassonne before they die. This first picture (left) is from an old postcard. I have just four pictures (including the one below) from our trip. We went in winter, in light snow. The old city, a medieval fortress that famously withstood a seige, looms above the bas ville.

The story is that when the city got down to its last pig, the people decided to try one last, desperate and daring strategem. They roasted the pig. Nibbled at it a bit. And pitched the meaty carcass over the wall like garbage. The Huns were aghast. Obviously, the city had a pipeline to a source of food, and were nowhere near giving up to seige. The Huns left, and the city survived.
I guess the name of the city means something like Carcass-town. Nice name. "I live in Carcassville." Sounds more like Texas than France.
